Mart's Vintage
Hot Rods

Brian Bass' old Drag pics.
Brian Bass posted this cool set of early drag pics on the hamb in response to my plea for vintage pics. The photo's were shot by David Kirk, and are reproduced here with permission.

There's something so evocative about those twin engined rail jobs.

What a straight old 40 koop.
Flat tow it to the drags, bolt on the slicks and DRAG!

Flat towing, while maybe not exactly the preferred method of moving a car, was the only way if ya don't got a trailer. Worked for me on Old Rusty too. Check the whitewall slicks.

OK, One for the drag history newbies: Why did weedburner headers like these lose popularity to the zoomie style? Cos the zoomies help blow away the tyre smoke, and the driver could see better. These puppies would smoke 'em the whole quarter remember. Blown Chrysler hemi rail was prepared to a high standard.

Blown Austin/Nash Metropolitan must have been a handfull with that short wheelbase. Appears to have 39 Ford front hubs. I remember a kid at college saying he asked his dad, "Whats that car with a door like a draining board, Dad?" "It's a Metropolitan, Son".

No, it's not your eyes, that front axle really is that wide. cherry body and chrome on this 34. Healthy chop too.

GASSER!

Funky 32 five winda flip top. Engine appears to be this side of the firewall.

Jeez this Willys looks MEAN! There's something about an un-narrowed axle and ten-inch wide slicks.
